abstract
This study aims to assess the knowledge level of members of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) operating in Tripura regarding the functioning, benefits, and operational procedures of these organizations. FPOs play a crucial role in empowering small and marginal farmers by enabling them to access collective bargaining, resources, and markets. However, the success of FPOs largely depends on the understanding and awareness of their members about how these organizations operate and how they can leverage their membership for economic benefits. The research investigates key areas such as members’ awareness of the FPO structure, the role of collective action, financial services, market linkages, and government support schemes. The study was undertaken based on data collected from 108 randomly selected respondents of the selected respective FPOs in Tripura. Through surveys and interviews with FPO members, the study identifies knowledge gaps that may limit the effectiveness of FPOs in addressing farmers' challenges. Based on the number of operational FPOs in each district, two districts (South Tripura and Gomati) were purposefully chosen out of the eight. Two efficient and productive FPOs were purposefully chosen from the districts of Gomati and South Tripura. Ultimately, both districts had four FPOs. The study found that over two-thirds (74.1%) of respondents had a medium level of awareness regarding the FPO, with 15.7 percent having a high level of knowledge and 10.2 percent having a low level of knowledge.
