Impact of cluster frontline demonstration on adoption of improved practices of Sunflower (Helinathus annuuss L.) cultivation

Shivamurthy D, Prasanna PM and Bharamaraj Badiger

The Cluster Front line demonstration (CFLD) conducted by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hanumanamatti, Haveri District during 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-2021 during late Kharif in villages of Haveri Distrct, Karnataka. It is an appropriate means for demonstration as well as transfer of improved agricultural innovations to the farming community. The CFLD were conducted under centrally sponsored scheme on oilseed production technology under NMOOP scheme, KVK, has conducted 125 front line demonstrations in farmer’s fields during 2019-20, 2020-21 and 2021-22 over an area of 50.0 ha on sunflower production technologies. The results of demonstration showed that farmers could increase the sunflower productivity notably by switching over to improved variety and adoption of improved production technology. From the front line demonstration, it was observed that the sunflower variety KBSH-53 recorded higher yield (20.29q/ha) as compared to farmers practice (15.71q/ha). The increase in the demonstration yield over farmer’s practices was 26.9 per cent. The technology gap and Extension gap were 3.87 q/ha and 4.77q/ha respectively. The yield levels were considerably low under local practices because of considerable variations in the extent of adoption of recommended package of practices, depending upon the amount of risk involved in terms of cost, convenience, skill and knowledge about the concerned practice. The productivity was better over local practice under demonstrations. Hence, sunflower production technology has a broad scope for increasing the area and production at each and every level viz., Farmers, State and National level.
