Effect of yoga on the health of senior citizen

The present study was taken to find out the effect of yoga on the health of senior citizens. Yoga is a type of mind body exercise that combines physical activities with a mindful internal focus on awareness of self, breath and energy. Yoga may counteract age related declines in memory and other cognitive skills and helps to keep person healthy physically and mentally. Using the comparative cross-sectional design study 120 senior citizens (60 male and 60 female) were selected. Among the120 elderly respondents selected for this study, 60 participants were engaged in yoga practices, while the remaining 60 did not. A self-structured Questionnaire was used to collect the information. Data was analysed using mean, S.D, and t-test for comparison of mental health and physical of selected two groups. The results revealed that the senior citizens who were doing yoga scored higher on the positive component of mental health and a significant difference was found between the groups on the component of physical fitness (t=7.169) Spirituality (t=3.101), Sense of Conflicts (t=5.489) and depression (t=4.743) at the 5%level of significance.
