Spices and condiments accounted for over 850 billion Indian rupees in
the Indian economy of the fiscal year 2021 contributing about six percent to
the GVA of crops. India is the largest producer, consumer and exporter
of spices in the world. During 2020 -21 India recorded as the largest
producer of spices with a production of 106.79 lakh tonnes from
an estimated area of 45.28 lakh ha. Assam is one of the states of
India with more than 10000 ha area under spice and more than
10000 tonnes of spice production. Present study was undertaken with
the objectives to study the growth and instability in area, production and
productivity of major spices in Assam. First five major spice crops grown in
Assam from area point of view viz., coriander, ginger, turmeric, chilli and
garlic were selected for the present study. To analyse the growth and
instability of area, production and yield of major spices in Assam secondary
data were collected from 2001-02 to 2021-22. Chilli, turmeric, coriander and garlic showed
positive significant growth in area. Whereas, ginger showed negative growth in
area during 2001-02 to 2021-22. Coriander and garlic showed medium and high
instability in production and yield during 2001-02 to 2021-22.
