Kodo millet (Paspalum Scrobiculatum) is an underutilized cereal crop that can thrive in tough climates, making it a great choice for sustainable farming in dry areas. This crop tolerates drought well and can grow in difficult soils, such as shallow, stony, and acidic fields, where most major cereals fail to perform well. Kodo has minimal requirement for fertilizers, water, labor, and pest control makes it ideal for small-scale farmers with limited resources with maturity time of 80 to 100 days, Kodo millet is suitable for crop rotation and double-cropping plans. The plant naturally resists common pests and diseases, which cuts down the need for pesticides and supports organic farming. Its deep roots help protect the soil, especially in sloped and erosion-prone regions, while intercropping and rotating with pulses can boost soil health and crop yield. Furthermore, the crop’s ability to handle heat stress, changes in moisture, and climate variability further supports its growth in a changing environment. Incorporation of roasted Kodo millet powder with dark chocolate results in a value-added product which can be used to attract consumers of various age groups as dark chocolate is known widely for its cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.
