Knowledge, perception, and constraints of farmers regarding pesticide use and its health implications in Phagi Block of Jaipur District, Rajasthan

Ganesh Choudhary and VK Sharma

The present study was conducted in the Phagi block of Jaipur district, Rajasthan, to assess farmers’ awareness, opinions, and constraints related to pesticide use and its health implications. A total of 90 farmers were selected from five purposively chosen villages, namely Chauru, Nimera, Chakwara, Mendwas, and Lasariya, using a proportionate random sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured and pre-tested interview schedule and analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean, percentage, and rank order. The analysis of 25 knowledge statements revealed a moderate overall mean score of 1.896, indicating partial awareness of pesticide hazards. Farmers exhibited the highest knowledge regarding protective clothing (mean = 2.41, Rank I) and use of gloves and masks (mean = 2.36, Rank II), while poor awareness was recorded for safe storage near water sources (mean = 1.87) and working barefoot in sprayed fields (mean = 1.57). Among opinion statements, 93.33% of respondents supported the use of protective equipment, 83.33% endorsed timely sowing and harvesting, and 93.33% favoured neem-based bio-pesticides, reflecting positive attitudes toward sustainable pest management practices. The major constraints identified included lack of awareness about pesticide toxicity (72.22%), illiteracy (64.44%), economic limitations to purchase safety equipment (66.66%), and inadequate extension services (50%). The study highlights that while farmers demonstrate fair awareness of visible safety measures, significant knowledge and behavioural gaps persist regarding chronic health risks and environmental impacts. Strengthened extension education, regular training, and affordable protective resources are essential to bridge the knowledge-practice gap and promote safe, sustainable pesticide use, leading to better health and environmental outcomes.
