Investigating farm work-related injury causes: A review

Kapil Gayakwad, Sanwal Singh Meena, Narayan Lal Panwar and Manjeet Singh

Agriculture is a vital livelihood for many in Rajasthan, but it also involves a lot of risks. This paper reviews agricultural accidents in the region, identifying their causes, impacts, and potential solutions. Rajasthan's arid climate and diverse farming practices create unique challenges that lead to frequent agricultural accidents. Key factors include the use of outdated or poorly maintained machinery, exposure to hazardous chemicals, and harsh environmental conditions. Machinery like tractors and combine harvesters often cause severe injuries or fatalities. Additionally, improper handling of pesticides and other chemicals can lead to acute poisoning or long-term health issues. Environmental conditions further complicate safety. Extreme temperatures, unpredictable weather, and rugged terrain increase the risk of dehydration, heatstroke, and machinery accidents. The socio-economic consequences of these accidents are significant. They not only affect farmers' health but also disrupt productivity and income. The costs of medical care and lost labour can deeply impact farming families, while the psychological toll includes grief and trauma for affected communities. Efforts to mitigate these risks include policy improvements, educational programs, and technological advancements. Government initiatives aim to enhance machinery safety standards and promote personal protective equipment (PPE). Training programs focus on safe practices and proper chemical handling. Agricultural accidents in Rajasthan are a pressing issue with broad implications for safety and productivity. Addressing these challenges requires a combination of policy reform, education, and technological innovation to improve safety and well-being in the agricultural sector. Ongoing collaboration and research are essential to develop effective solutions and ensuring a safer agricultural environment.
