Agri and aqua tourism: Synergistic approaches for sustainable rural development

Boda Mahesh Naik and Athira Raveendran

Agri and aqua tourism are emerging as key strategies for sustainable rural development, offering substantial economic benefits and promoting cultural preservation. This paper explores the synergistic potential of combining agriculture and aquaculture with tourism, where agritourism generates additional income streams for farmers, and aquatourism leverages water-based activities to attract eco-conscious travellers. Case studies from different parts of the world provide practical insights into diverse approaches and outcomes in implementing these models. Through a comprehensive review, this study evaluates the impacts, challenges, and future directions of these tourism models, emphasizing their roles in enhancing rural livelihoods, conserving natural resources, and fostering environmental awareness. The analysis, using frameworks like SWOT and PEST, reveals the strengths, growth opportunities, and barriers faced by these sectors. The findings highlight that integrating agritourism and aqua tourism can contribute significantly to resilient and sustainable rural economies, driving social inclusion and promoting environmentally friendly practices.
